Abstract: Case studies in software engineering are an empirical enquiry of a contemporary phenomenon within its real-life context. Therefore, case studies are a powerful and flexible empirical method that provides us with research results from real-world projects. Properly done case studies can provide insight that can hardly be gained by other empirical methods. However, due to the less controlled setting, case studies have to be carefully planned, executed, and reported. In this talk, I will present guidelines for planning, executing, and reporting case study research in software engineering. The guidelines will be underpinned by example studies, where I have been involved, mainly from the domain of software testing.
Speaker: Michael Felderer is an associate professor at the Department of Computer Science at the University of Innsbruck, Austria and a guest professor at the Department of Software Engineering at the Blekinge Institute of Technology, Sweden. He is an internationally renown expert on empirical research methodology for software engineering and co-editor of the recently published book “Contemporary Empirical Methods in Software Engineering”. His further fields of expertise and interest include software quality, AI and software engineering, requirements engineering, and model-based software engineering. Michael Felderer holds a habilitation degree from the University of Innsbruck, co-authored more than 150 publications and received 10 best paper awards. His research has a strong empirical focus also using methods of data science and is directed towards the development and evaluation of efficient and effective methods to improve the quality and value of industrial software systems and processes in close collaboration with companies. Michael Felderer himself has more than 15 years of industrial experience as a senior executive consultant, project manager and software engineer. He is an internationally recognized member of the software engineering research community and supports it as an editorial board member of the journals Information and Software Technology (IST), IET Software and International Journal on Software Tools for Technology Transfer (STTT), organizer of conferences (e.g., General Chair of SE 20 and PROFES 2017, Program Co-Chair of SEAA 2017, Industry Co-Chair of ESEC/FSE 2019, Program Co-Chair of TechDebt 2020) and regular PC member of premier conferences (e.g., ESEM, ICST, EASE or ICSSP).
